Las arenas ricas en oro del río Tajo son uno de los principales símbolos de abundancia y opulencia en la literatura latina. Mencionado repetidamente desde su primera mención en Catulo (19.18-20; Referencia Cornish1962), el Tajo aurífero fue durante siglos sinónimo de la abundancia de oro en Hispania y, en consecuencia, de la inmensa riqueza de la región (Referencia Fernández Nieto1970). El análisis arqueológico realizado en Lusitania en este proyecto ha revelado la realidad histórica que hay detrás de este paisaje de fábula.
Aunque la relevancia de la minería en Lusitania no ha pasado desapercibida para los investigadores (Edmonson Referencia Edmonson1987; Domergue Referencia Domergue1990), aún falta una síntesis que evalúe su alcance e impacto real (Sánchez-Palencia & Currás Referencia Sánchez-Palencia, Currás y Nogales2017). Son escasos los estudios detallados de zonas mineras concretas, así como los que abordan la relación entre la minería y la evolución de los asentamientos y la organización del territorio, o los que consideran la evolución y transformación del paisaje.

the monastery of Santa María la Real, an impressive Romanesque building built mostly between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It was one of the most important cultural centers of the region during the Middle Ages. Breathtaking is its Cistercian cloister, with an extension of the upper cloister from the 17th century. The church was built between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Visitors should not miss the Collegiate Church of San Miguel, the Church of Santa Cecilia -with its spectacular interior capitals-, the Monastery of Santa Clara or the Church of San Andrés. A spectacular open-air museum that does not end here. Because the streets of Aguilar de Campoo are worth a leisurely visit, to enjoy its emblazoned houses and palaces, before encountering the castle and the gates of what was the medieval town.
